This roadrunner (Geococcyx californianus) lives on the hill behind the house. Spotted today walking along the fence...neither the dogs nor this photographer seemed to disturb the bird at all! (This is a sized-down, highly compressed jpeg image...the actual image is much sharper).

Husband Dave took this photo at about 2:45 PM PST today (March 1). He heard a loud WHAM on the side of the house and went to see if the neighbor boys were playing ball and hitting the wall...this is what he found! OUCH!

Island Scrub Jay

We saw two of these on Santa Cruz Island in Channel Islands National Park today. They're a sub-species of scrub jay, endemic to the Islands, about 10% larger than the mainland population, and they appeared to us to be a brighter blue.

This one has been tagged. The right wing is a little frayed on the trailing edge (many of them showed wear and tear like this, but it didn't seem to affect their flight capability).

A small area of scales is rubbed to reveal the underlying membrane, and a tag is folded over and stuck to the leading edge of the wing.
